Treasures of the Getty Villa

Presented by US Discussion Forum for the Humanities and Social Sciences. With Samantha Masters from the Department of Ancient Studies

The Getty Villa in Malibu, California, is a realisation of J. Paul Getty’s dream to recreate the ancient Roman Villa dei Papiri from Herculaneum, destroyed by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 CE. The Villa now houses one of the finest ancient art collections in the world, though it has been recently tainted with controversy around the illicit acquisition of certain artefacts. This visual lecture explored the fascinating Getty Villa and its treasures, as well as recent intrigues and court cases involving the museum.
