The use of cellphones in CUAs (Computer User Areas – RGAs in Afrikaans) is strictly prohibited! Information Technology after lengthy consideration and debate with all roleplayers have decided to ban the use of cellphones within CUAs and other high-risk areas.
In a nutshell this means that although you may bring the cellphone itself into the area, it must be switched off. It may not be on Silent, Discrete or Vibrate-only mode, but physically switched off!
Any student or personnel member caught using a cellphone within GERGA (especially during exams) will be given an immediate spot fine of R50. Repeat offenders will be banned from using GERGA.
The only people permitted to have or use active cellphones are designated IT personnel and the CUA manager and his/her staff. They might require the use of cellphones for troubleshooting, networking and PC problems with outside technicians and are often on 24-hour standby needing the use of cellphones. GERGA personnel now have digital cordless telephones which do not interfere with the network communications.
