Cobus is lecturer of Intellectual Property Law, Mercantile Law (Internet Law) (LLB) , Information Technology Law (LLM) and Business Management (B.Mus Ed.) in the Department of Mercantile Law.

He is a member of the IP Team and a Fellow of the Anton Mostert Chair of Intellectual Property and holds the degrees BA(Law) and LLB from Stellenbosch University.

His LLD research involves the copyright protection of computer programs and focuses on the decompilation prohibition and the protection of non-literal elements of software. He has a background in computer programming and graphic design and has an interest in epistemology and the impact of digital emersion on legal-educational practices. He was a recipient of the full term NCPETF scholarship for 5 years.

He is the author of several articles on issues of intellectual property, including an analysis of the Piracy Treaty (ACTA) and commentary on the SA Press Code and journalistic plagiarism.

His most recent work include: a paper delivered on the Legal and IP implications of Social Media at the IP Indaba of the Free Market Foundation; an address at the Conference of the Society of Law Teachers of Southern Africa on the copyright protection of computer games and the control question for purposes of identifying the author/owner of copyright in computer programs and an address at the Department of Practical Business Law at the University of Johannesburg on the application of the IRAC teaching method to modules in business law to non-law students.
