Gerhard Lubbe is in 1977 aangestel as Professor in Privaatreg en tree in einde Desember 2014 in hierdie hoedanigheid af.  Hy is tans ‘n Navorsingsgenoot en deeltydse dosent in die Departement Privaatreg. Hy was dekaan van die Fakulteit Regsgeleerdheid vanaf April 2007 tot Julie 2012 nadat hy ook gedurende Maart tot Desember 2006, April tot Julie 2005 asook gedurende die tydperke Mei tot Julie 2000 en November 1993 tot Junie 1994 in hierdie hoedanigheid waargeneem het.  Hy dien vanaf  2010 – 2013 op die Raad van die Universiteit van Stellenbosch. Gerhard Lubbe was appointed Professor of Private Law in 1977 and retired in this capacity in December 2014.  He is presently a temporary lecturer and Research Fellow in the Department of Private Law. He was dean of the Faculty of Law from April 2007 until July 2012 after acting in this capacity from March – December 2006, April – July 2005 and during the period May – July 2000 November 1993-June 1994.  He has served as a member of the Council of the University of Stellenbosch from 2010 – 2013.
Sy akademiese belangstellingsvelde is kontraktereg, sessie en estoppel. Hy is ‘n mede-lid van die International Academy of Comparative Law, dien vanaf  2009 tot 2014 op die Wetenskaplike Adviesraad van die Max Planck-Instituut vir Regsvergelyking en Internasionale Privaatreg in Hamburg en by geleentheid lid van die Adviserende Raad van die Tilburg Instituut vir Regsvergelyking (TICOM).  Hy dien op die Suid-Afrikaanse Regskommissie se Projekkomitee aangaande Onbillike Kontraksterme (1991-1994), die Staande Komitee oor die Hersiening van die Kontraktereg (1995) en die Werkgroep oor Bydraende Nalatigheid (2003). His main academic fields of interest are contract, cession and the law of estoppel.  He is an Associate member of the International Academy of Comparative Law and served on the Oversight Board of the Max Planck Institute for Foreign and Comparative Law in Hamburg from 2009 until 2014.  He was formerly a member of Advisory Board of the Tilburg Institute for Comparative Law (TICOM).  He was a member of the Project Committee on Unfair Contract Terms of the South African Law Commission (1991-1994), the Standing Commission on the Reform of Contract Law of the South African Law Commission (1995) and of the Working Group on Contributory Negligence (2003).
Hy ontvang die Rektorstoekenning vir Voortreflike Onderrig vir 1995 en doseer by geleentheid in deeltydse hoedanigheid aan Universiteite van Kaapstad en Wes-Kaapland en was Besoekende professor aan die Katolieke Universiteit van Leuven, België en die Fakulteit Regsgeleerdheid van die Eduardo Mondlane Universiteit in Maputo, Mosambiek. Vanaf 1999 – 2002 was hy ‘n “Adjunct Professor of Law”, in die Fakulteit Regsgeleerdheid van die Universiteit van Kaapstad. Ontvang die Toon van den Heever Prys vir Regswetenskap vir 2014 (met prof JE du Plessis). He received the Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Teaching in 1995 and has lectured in a part time capacity at the Universities of the Western Cape and Cape Town.  He has been a Visiting Professor at the Catholic University of Leuven, Belgium and the Faculty of Law, University Eduardo Mondlane, Maputo, Mozambique (International Commercial Law) and was an Adjunct Professor of Law, Faculty of Law, University of Cape Town during 1999 – 2002.  Awarded Toon van den Prize for Legal Science, South African for 2014 (with prof JE du Plessis).
