Prof AJ van der Walt spesialiseer in sakereg, sakeregteorie, grondwetlike sakereg en transformasie van die sakereg. Prof van der Walt het vir twee termyne as voorsitter van die NNS paneel verantwoordelik vir die evaluering van regsakademici gedien. Hy het die Von Humboldt toekenning vir nadoktorale navorsing in Duitsland vier keer ontvang. Die laaste toekenning was in 2010 en hy is in 2004 en weer 2010 as genoot van die Trinity College, Cambridge, verkies. Die kwaliteit en internasionale erkenning van Prof van der Walt se navorsing word bevestig deur die A1-evaluering van die NNS, vir die eerste keer toegeken in 2002 en daarna weer in 2007 en 2012.  Prof van der Walt is tans die houer van die Suid-Afrikaanse Navorsingsleerstoel in Sakereg. Prof AJ van der Walt specialises in property law, property theory, constitutional property law and transformation of property. Prof van der Walt served two terms as chairperson of the NRF panel for the evaluation of academics in law. Prof van der Walt has received the prestigious Von Humboldt award for postdoctoral research in Germany four times, the last of which was in 2010, and was elected to a fellowship in Trinity College, Cambridge, for 2004 and again 2010. The outstanding quality and international recognition of Prof van der Walt’s research initiatives were recognised by the award of an A1 evaluation by the NRF in 2002 and again in 2007 and 2012.
