Theo Broodryk is a Senior Lecturer and Manager of the Legal Aid Clinic. He completed his postgraduate LLB-degree at the Faculty in 2008. He commenced his articles of clerkship at Edward Nathan Sonnenbergs Inc in 2009 where he also practised as an attorney until September 2012. Theo commenced employment with the Faculty in October 2012. He is responsible for lecturing civil procedure.

In 2015, Theo received both the Rector’s Award for outstanding work performance and the MJ & HB Thom Research Funding Award. In 2016, the University formally recognised him as part of a group of 13 young researchers at the University who made the biggest contribution to the Department of Higher Education and Training accredited scientific publications (2014 output year). In 2016, he attended Stanford Law School at Stanford University in the United States as a Visiting Scholar to conduct research on class action litigation. Theo is doing his Legum Doctor (LLD) degree, with the title of his dissertation being “Developing a Structure for the Adjudication of Class Actions in South Africa”.

Theo Broodryk is ‘n Senior Lektor en Bestuurder van die Regshulpkliniek. Hy het sy nagraadse LLB by die Fakulteit in 2008 voltooi. Hy het sy klerkskap by Edward Nathan Sonnenbergs Ing in 2009 begin waar hy ook as prokureur praktiseer tot September 2012. Theo sluit aan by die Fakulteit in Oktober 2012 waar hy tans doseer in Siviele Prosesreg.

In 2015 ontvang Theo beide die Rektorstoekenning vir voortreflike dienslewering en die MJ & HB Thom Navorsingstoekenning. In 2016 ontvang hy ook formele erkenning deur die Universiteit as deel van ’n groep van 13 jong navorsers aan die Universiteit wie die grooste bydra gelewer het tot die Departement Hoër Onderwys en Opleiding se geakkrediteerde wetenskaplike publikasies (2014 uitset-jaar). In 2016 besoek hy Stanford Regskool by Stanford Universiteit in die Verenigde State as ‘n Besoekende Skolier om navorsing te doen oor groepsgeding-litigasie. Theo is in die proses om sy Legum Doktor (LLD) graad te bekom. Die titel van sy verhandeling is “Developing a Structure for the Adjudication of Class Actions in South Africa”.

Stephan van der Merwe joined the Legal Aid Clinic, University of Stellenbosch as practising attorney in 2001, after serving his articles of clerkship in private practice.  Earlier he graduated from the University of Stellenbosch with a B Comm LLB and during 2002 he obtained an Advanced Certificate in Children’s Rights.  In 2005 he obtained an LLM (cum laude) and during 2007 he qualified as notary public and attorney with right of appearance in the High Court.  In 2016 he enrolled in the Post-Graduate Diploma in Higher Education Teaching and Learning.

Stephan is involved with community service in his capacity as the senior supervising attorney at the Legal Aid Clinic.  During the early 2000’s his work was instrumental in exposing the interest fraud which eventually led to the demise of Saambou Bank.  He also has extensive experience representing debtors in rescission of judgment and emoluments attachment order cases and his practice and research in this regard proved valuable in framing the applicant’s case in the Constitutional Court matter of University of Stellenbosch Legal Aid Clinic & others v Minister of Justice and Correctional Services & Others; Association of Debt Recovery Agents NPC v Clinic & Others; Mavava Trading 279 (Pty) Ltd & Others v Clinic & Others [2016] ZACC 32.

Stephan has published a number of articles in accredited journals and his academic field of interest is Clinical Legal Education. He lecturers Practical Legal Training and Legal Skills at the Faculty of Law, University of Stellenbosch.

Vroeër het hy met ‘n BComm LLB aan die Universiteit van Stellenbosch gegradueer en in 2002 behaal hy ‘n Gevorderde Sertifikaat in Kinderregte. In 2005 het hy ‘n LLM (cum laude) behaal en in 2007 kwalifiseer hy as notaris en prokureur met reg van verskyning in die Hooggeregshof. In 2016 het hy vir ʼn Nagraadse Diploma in Hoër Onderwys Onderrig en Leer ingeskryf.

Stephan is betrokke by gemeenskapsdiens in sy hoedanigheid as die senior toesighoudende prokureur by die Regshulpkliniek. In die vroeë 2000’s was sy werk instrumenteel in die blootstelling van die rente bedrog wat uiteindelik gelei het tot die ondergang van Saambou Bank. Hy het ook omvangryke ondervinding met die verteenwoordiging van debiteure in sake van tersydestelling van vonnisse en besoldigingsbeslagleggingsbevele, en sy ondervinding en navorsing in hierdie verband was waardevol vir die formulering van die applikant se saak in die Konstitusionele hofsaak van University of Stellenbosch Legal Aid Clinic & others v Minister of Justice and Correctional Services & Others; Association of Debt Recovery Agents NPC v Clinic & Others; Mavava Trading 279 (Pty) Ltd & Others v Clinic & Others [2016] ZACC 32.

Stephan het ‘n aantal artikels in geakkrediteerde joernale gepubliseer en sy akademiese veld van belangstelling lê in Kliniese Regsopleiding. Hy doseer in Praktiese Regsopleiding en Regsvaardighede aan die Fakulteit Regsgeleerdheid, Universiteit van Stellenbosch.

Chris is a law graduate of the University of South Africa where he obtained his LLB degree over 5 years while being employed fulltime at the Department of Correctional Services. He is currently undertaking a Masters Degree at the University of Stellenbosch. Prior to becoming an attorney, Chris taught at both primary and secondary schools and holds a Higher Education Diploma. He was employed at Correctional Services as a Principal Educationist, tasked with the rehabilitation of juvenile and adult offenders. Chris joined the Legal Aid Clinic as a Candidate Attorney in 2009 and was admitted as an attorney in 2010. He has the right of appearance in the High Court and is involved with public interest litigation and human rights issues. In addition to being a practicing attorney, he acts as Principal and mentor to Candidate Attorneys and final year law students respectively.

Chris is ʼn gegradueerde van die Universiteit van Suid Afrika waar hy sy LLB graad verwerf het terwyl hy voltyds by die Departement Korrektiewe Dienste werksaam was. Hy is tans besig om sy Meesters graad by die Universiteit Stellenbosch te voltooi. Voor hy as prokureur kwalifiseer het, het Chris as beide ʼn primêre – en sekondêre onderwyser skool gehou en beskik oor ʼn Hoër Onderwys Diploma. Hy was in diens van Korrektiewe Dienste as ʼn Prinsipaal Opvoedkundige, getaak met die rehabilitasie van jeugdige en volwasse oortreders. Chris het by die Regshulpkliniek van die Universiteit aangesluit as Kandidaat prokureur in 2009 en toegelaat as prokureur in 2010. Hy het verskyningsbevoegdheid in die Hooggeregshof en is betrokke by litigasie in die publieke belang asook menseregte. Addisioneel tot sy werksaamhede as ʼn praktiserende prokureur, tree hy ook, respektiewelik, op as prinsipaal en mentor vir kandidaat prokureurs en finale jaar studente.

Monja Posthumus-Meyjes het in 2014 by die Regshulpkliniek aangesluit. Sy spesialiseer in familie- en kinderreg. Sy het haar LLB en ‘n Sertifikaat in Gevorderde Arbeidsreg by die Universiteit van Pretoria voltooi. Voor sy by die Regshulpkliniek aangesluit het, was sy in die privaatpraktyk waar sy in familie- en arbeidsreg aangeleentheide spesialiseer het. Monja is ‘n gekwalifiseerde mediator. Haar navorsingsbelangstellings sluit in Hague ontvoerings en arbitrasie as ‘n alternatiewe geskil beslegtings meganisme in egskeidings.

Monja Posthumus-Meyjes joined the Legal Aid Clinic in 2014. She specializes in family- and children’s law. She completed her LLB and a Certificate in Advanced Labour Law at the University of Pretoria. Before joining the Legal Aid Clinic she was in private practice, where she specialized in family law and labour law. Monja is a qualified mediator. Her research interests include Hague abductions and arbitration as an alternative dispute resolution mechanism in divorces.

Nikita Roode het in 2008 by die Regshulpkliniek aangesluit as ‘n studente konsultant in die Regsfakulteit se Praktiese Regsopleiding kursus gedurende die finale jaar van haar LLB studies. Sy het haar klerkskap by die Regshulpkliniek begin in Januarie 2009, toe sy haar LLB graad verwerf het. Nadat sy haar klerkskap sedeer het na Regshulp, Suid-Afrika gedurende Oktober 2009, het sy haar klerkskap in Desember 2010 daar voltooi, waarna sy as prokureur van die Hooggeregshof toegelaat is in Februarie 2011. Sy is as praktiserende prokureur by die Regshulpkliniek aangestel in Februarie 2011 en staan kliënte by met algemene litigasie en advies, asook egskeidingsaangeleenthede, met haar fokus meestal op die opponering van uitsettingsaansoeke. Sy het intussen ook gekwalifiseer as prokureur met reg van verskyning in die Hooggeregshof. Sy staan finale jaar regstudente by die Regshulpkliniek by met advies, en mentor kandidaat prokureurs wie onder haar geregistreer is by die Kaapse Wetsgenootskap.

Nikita Roode joined the Legal Aid Clinic as a student consultant in the Law Faculty’s Practical Legal Training course during the final year of her LLB studies. She started with her articles at the Legal Aid Clinic in January 2009, when she obtained her LLB degree. After ceding her articles to Legal Aid, South Africa during October 2009, she completed her articles there in December 2010, whereafter she was admitted as an attorney of the High Court in February 2011. She was appointed as practising attorney at the Legal Aid Clinic in February 2011, and assists clients with general civil litigation and advice, as well as divorce matters, with her focus mostly on opposing eviction applications. She qualified as attorney with right of appearance in the High Court. She also assists final year law students at the Legal Aid Clinic with advice, and mentors candidate attorneys who are registered under her at the Cape Law Society.
