A gala dinner was held on the 5th November 2011 at the Stellenbosch Institute for Advanced Studies to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the Department of Microbiology. It was attended by approximately 150 current members and post-graduate alumni of the department, with a previous Rector, Prof Andreas van Wyk, a previous Dean of the Faculty of Science, Prof Fritz Hahne, and the current Dean, Prof Eugene Cloete as special guests. Unfortunately the current Rector, Prof Russell Botman was called at short notice to speak at a dinner in honour of Prince Charles and the Dutchess of Cornwall.  Three short speeches to highlight the history of the department were given in person and one was read out on behalf of all four of the previous and current chairpersons of the department. The evening provided a wonderful opportunity for ex students and staff to renew contact with fellow students from their own era plus their previous supervisors and other staff. We wish to express our gratitude to all of those that were present for making it such a memorable evening and regret that some of our alumni were unable to attend.
