_DSC0416The Council of Stellenbosch University (SU) appointed Prof Louise Warnich, Vice-Dean (Research) in the Faculty of AgriSciences, as the new dean of the Faculty of Science at SU.

Prof Warnich obtained a PhD in Human Genetics from SU, joined the Department of Genetics in 1992 and was appointed as Professor in 2003. She also served as Chair of the Department. She was also employed by the Division Human Genetics in the SU Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences. She served as chair of the Southern African Human Genetics Society from 2007 – 2009 and also serves on the Council of the Elsenburg Agricultural Training Institute. She is an associate editor of the Current Pharmacogenomics and Personalized Medicine and a review editor for Frontiers in Pharmacogenetics. Her field of study is the pharmocogenetics, the study of variability in drug response due to heredity.

“The Faculty of Science is responsible for the training of the next generation of scientists in maths, physics and biology and makes an important contribution to SU’s research profile. I believe the Faculty can perform very well in the ever-changing environment that research-driven universities find themselves in. The challenge is to create an environment and culture in which staff members and students can unlock their full potential and build partnerships inside and outside of SU. As alumna of the Faculty it will be a privilege for me to lead the growth and development of this Faculty to even greater heights.”

The Department of Microbiology would like to congratulate Prof. Warnich on her new appointment and wishes her every success in her new duties as Dean of the Faculty of Science!
