Stellenbosch University saddened by death of student

The Management of Stellenbosch University has learned with shock and great sadness of the death of one of its students, Mr Mufunwa M Munyangane (22), a BComm (Financial Accounting) student of Sibasa in Limpopo. Mr Munyangane passed away in the Stellenbosch Medi-Clinic on Sunday morning. The University has not officially been informed on the cause of death.Mr Llewellyn MacMaster, the Student Dean, said that it is always a great loss for the University when a student whose life laid open before him, passes away. “Mr Munyangane was a final year student and would have been able to make a huge contribution to the country’s economic and social upliftment. In addition, Mr Munyangane is the seventh student that the University has lost this year,” Mr MacMaster said.

Via the Office of the Student Dean and the Centre for Student Counselling and Development, the University is offering the necessary support, assistance and counselling to anyone who would like to make use of it and has already supported the friends of Mr Munyangane in this difficult time. The University has also expressed its condolences with the parents of Mr Munyangane who are in Stellenbosch at the moment.

Mnr Munyangane will be laid to rest in his home town this coming Saturday.

Even if some were not due to violence it is a fact that some students are experiencing violent attacks. Shouldnt something be done before others end up injured or worse DEAD!!!!!!!!!!!!

  3. Stellenbosch University is saddened by the loss of seven students during the first semester of 2009. Some of these deaths have been due to illness and motor vehicle accidents off campus, and not violent crimes. Although the recent incidents did not take place on campus, Prof Russel Botman, Rector and Vice-Chancellor, requested staff and students in a recent communiqué to take the same precautions for personal safety and the protection of property that are applicable elsewhere in South Africa.

Various safety-related services are available to students. For more information, please visit http://blogs.sun.ac.za/news/2009/06/17/su-rector-warns-about-safety/

  5. Please accept my condolensces.

I refer to the second to the last line of the first paragraph which says Mr. Munyangane is the seventh student to die in the University within this year. This is scary especially for those of us who are not south africans and have never lived there but are due to resume for lectures at the university.

I’ve been hearing various news of violence in and around the school and it is scaring me as i am due to resume for my postgraduate course in july 2009 and my lectures will be in the evening.

Is the town safe at all?
