SU doctoral student wins Young Chemist Award

Simon Herbert and Dr Gareth Arnott

Simon Herbert, a doctoral student in the Department of Chemistry and Polymer Science at Stellenbosch University, received the Young Chemist Award at the 11th Frank Warren Conference held in Pietermaritzburg.

The conference, held by the South African Chemical Institute, covered all branches of organic chemistry.

Simon’s research project, done under supervision of Dr Gareth Arnott, focuses on creating asymmetrical bowlshaped molecules called calixarenes.

This is an important step in the synthesising of new molecules that might prove useful for the pharmaceutical and fine chemical industries.
