Botzoo, CIB students share knowledge at National Science Week
Students from the Department of Botany and Zoology and the DST-NRF Centre of Excellence for Invasion Biology (C·I·B) at Stellenbosch University took part in the National Science Week festivities at the MTN Sciencentre in Cape Town, by sharing information about their research fields with local learners.
The students acted as mentors during the “Speed date a role model” event at the Sciencentre, in which they had the chance to answer questions about their fields of research, study opportunities at SU and life on campus. Learners from various Cape Town schools attended the event.
The National Science Week, which was held from 2 to 7 August, is an initiative of the Department of Science and Technology (DST) and is implemented by the South African Agency for Science and Technology Advancement (SAASTA). The initiative is aimed at highlighting the important role science plays in everyday life and attracting young people to science, engineering and technology careers. Themed “the role of science in economic development”, activities to help raise awareness about science and technology in the country include workshops, competitions, exhibitions, public talks, lectures and seminars.
