Mathematicians gather to discuss arithmetic geometry
Thirteen international visitors are attending the biannual Conference on Arithmetic Geometry this week, which is being hosted by the Department of Mathematical Sciences: Mathematics Division.
The conference features talks on arithmetic geometry, related areas or applications thereof.
Academics from France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Madagascar, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Taiwan, UK and USA are joined by South African mathematicians and students to discuss topics such as Gamma values, the Pila-Wilkie Theorem and the complexity of algebraic numbers.
It is the fourth conference of its kind to be held since its inception in 2005.
The conference is being organised by Prof Florian Breuer of the SU Department of Mathematical Sciences: Mathematics Division, and Prof Barry Green, director of the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS).

Im very inspired to find that an alumnus of MAKERERE UNIVERSITY-Mr.Bamunoba Alex participated in such an international conference.
He must have inspired other people with whom we were academic friends.God’s blessings!

I happened to participate in this conference. It was a very fruitful interaction with the experts from all over the globe. I got exposed to deep underlying and interconnections between geometry and number theory, (more so in the function field setting).
What caught me most were talks on Gamma values (arithmetic and geometric), and then Taelmann’s talk on cyclotomic function fields (very inspiring though it got a little technical later on).
It will have a long lasting effect on me.
