The challenges of leadership

The year 2011 will be remembered as a time when leadership in Africa and the Middle-East came under close scrutiny; a time when young activists protested totalitarian and corrupt rulers and so affected change in their societies.

The future growth of South Africa and the rest of our continent depends on competent, ethical, courageous and principled leaders who act in the interest of the communities they serve.

It is no longer enough for universities to just provide graduates with an excellent academic qualification. Stellenbosch University (SU) wants to develop well-rounded thought leaders who have broadened their horizons; young people who are committed to ploughing what they have learnt and experienced back into society.

Next level

This commitment is now being taken to the next level with the establishment of the Frederik Van Zyl Slabbert (FVZS) Institute for Student Leadership Development at Stellenbosch University (SU).

Dr Slabbert was the Chancellor of the University from 2008 to 2009, when he had to step down due to illness. He passed away in 2010.

Dr Slabbert was a visionary free-thinker and principled leader. Deeply committed to non-racialism, he devoted decades to building democracy and reducing the polarisation between black and white South Africans.FVZS logo rgb

The objective of the Institute is to foster ethical leadership and an understanding of students’ role as leaders in an African and global context; and to develop leadership, communication, conceptual and management skills.
