Weekend of diverse music-making at the Endler

This coming weekend will see two very different concerts grace the Endler Hall stage. On May 7 at 20:00 the Endler Concert Series presents the University of Stellenbosch Jazz Band (USJB) under the baton of Felicia Lesch.

This vibrant young ensemble has created quite a stir with a number of rousing performances given over the last couple of years, hence their inclusion in the Endler Concert Series this year. They will be joined by the Jazz Vocal Ensemble in a programme of Jazz standards and favourites. A large contingent of both the band and the vocal ensemble is drawn from students across campus as well as the Music Department’s Certificate Programme (CP).

The CP is not only well known for its ground-breaking work in the field of music education for the previously disadvantaged, but it also provides access to higher music education studies in any of the formal programmes offered at SU. Also appearing on the programme are the Two-five-ones, who made their debut on the Endler stage under the direction of Lou-Ann Stone last year and the Jazz Focus Group (aka JFG), directed by Ramon Alexander. Made up of former members of the USJB, this quintet will entertain lovers of jazz with highly sophisticated performances of jazz standards.

On Sunday May 8 at 16:30, the internationally acclaimed and multi award-winning Stellenbosch University Choir, under the direction of their long-standing resident musical director, André van der Merwe, will perform a special concert to celebrate their 75th birthday. As a result of the long-standing relationship between the ever popular SU Choir and the Endler Concert Series, a full hall is anticipated for this one, so patrons are advised to book early.

  • Tickets for both concerts are available from Computicket. For more information contact 021 808 2358 / 084 682 1337 or e-mail: howlett@sun.ac.za
