Bill on the Protection of Information: SU welcomes proposed changes

Stellenbosch University welcomes the proposed changes to the Bill on the Protection of Information announced in Parliament on Friday, says Prof Arnold van Zyl, Acting Rector and Vice-Rector: Research.

“As the proposed changes will limit the classification of information to the security departments, it should affect the teaching and research at university in exceptional cases only. Hopefully requests for bona fide research on topics relating to the security sector which is proven to be in the interest of the South African society will receive favourable consideration.”

Earlier this week Stellenbosch University voiced its concerns over academic freedom and the prosecution of academics if the Bill on the Protection of Information, 2009 is approved by Parliament.
