Ensuring a safe and sufficient blood supply in South Africa
Many South Africans underestimate the value and importance of safe blood supply and the rate of consumption by emergency units. Balancing the need to increase the supply with strategies to ensure the safety of the blood led to heated debates about issues of exclusion versus discrimination.
Experts from the Western Province Blood Transfusion Service will share how a combination of technology and donor screening strategies are used to ensure safe blood supply in a country with high levels of HIV prevalence and blood transmittable diseases.
