Visitors enchanted at Engineering Open Day

“Everything I needed!” and “Much more that I expected.” These are some of the positive comments made by people who attended the Faculty of Engineering’s Open Day on 21 April.

The lively demonstration by Carl Tshamala, postgraduate student in Mechanical Engineering, drew many visitors.

This popular event takes place every year to create public awareness regarding the exciting world of engineers and also to simulate interest in this creative and rewarding career amongst learners. The five engineering departments enchanted visitors with interesting and exciting demonstrations and exhibitions showing how engineers use science and technology to create a better world for all. Several companies that provide bursaries to students were also present.

Attendance was exceptionally good this year. Visitors were welcomed in a marquee tent and received a complete kit containing information, marketing material, a list of exhibits and a route map. A few information sessions were also held where visitors were informed about the Faculty’s degree programmes, engineering in general, as well as attractive career prospects. During these sessions a demonstration was given showing the way interpreting is done at the Faculty. An English speaking mother commented afterwards that this has helped them to overcome their concern regarding language, and that her daughter can now look forward to studying Engineering at Stellenbosch University.

As usual, learners from several schools attended the Open Day in groups. A good number of parents accompanying their children were also present. This marketing and recruitment drive is an excellent example of team effort as a great number of personnel and students participated in it. Their hard work has been rewarded if one listens to another comment made by a learner who attended: “It was brilliant! I now know what I want to study.”

  1. Daardie ‘besorgde moeder’ se kommentaar is presies hoekom die fakulteit in so ‘n verknorsing is rakende taal!

  2. Ingenieurswese Opedag was uitstekend.
