Latest Matieland – Riaan Cruywagen writes for us
The latest edition of Matieland, Stellenbosch University’s alumni magazine, is now available online. A translated version – in English – is available here (Inetkey must be open).
Is Africa awakening? This is the question that is asked in the front page article written by freelance journalist Jaco Leuvennink. Other articles are about, among others, the Y Generation while Engela Duvenage of the Faculty of Science, provides an overview of the SKA Project and Wayne Muller of Communication and Liaison says that criminals must take note of “agri-detectives” Dr Donna Cawthorn and Prof Chrisjan Cruywagen, both of the Department of Animal Science. Be sure as to not miss the “backpage” article by renowned TV presenter, Riaan Cruywagen.
In their opinion editorials Prof Mariana Kruger of the Department of Paediatrics and Child Health says that there is hope for children suggering from cancer while Prof Mark Swilling of the School of Public Leadership argues that growth in Africa is only possible if it is environmentally sustainable and if social justice is pursued.
Matieland, boasting a new look, is also packed with news on alumni, student and sports affairs. Books editor Stephanie provides a roundup of the latest news on books and cultural activities while feedback is also given on the progress of the HOPE Project. The online edition also contains a number of video links.
All University staff receive a printed copy of Matieland but will soon be asked to give an indication of the format (printed or online) in which they would like to receive the magazine. Developing Matieland as an app for tablet computers is in the pipeline.
