SU Choir ends succesful year with two gala concerts in October

The Stellenbosch University Choir has experienced a very exciting year.

At the end of June the 109 choir members travelled to Cincinnati, USA, to take part in the 7th World Choir Games – the olympic games for choirs. The choir competed in three categories and were crowned world champions in two : Mixed Choirs and Musica Sacra (religious music). Their 96.88%  in the category Music Sacra is the highest marks ever to be awarded to a choir competing in the World Choir Games.

Through their performances in South Africa and abroad during the World Choir Games, the US Choir, directed by André van der Merwe, has built up an outstanding international reputation of excellence in performance and adventuresome programming. This amateur choir is combined out of students from Stellenbosch University who come from all walks of life – young people who love choral singing. Most of the choir members do not have formal voice training and do not study music.

The choir will perform their exciting programme during two gala concerts.

On Sunday 14 October 2012 at 16:30 the US Choir will perform their first concert in the Endler Hall, Stellenbosch.

The second Gala Concert takes place on Friday 19 October 2012 at 20:00 – also in the Endler Hall.

Both concerts will include the music which was performed at the World Choir Games as well as Christmas Carols. Included in the programme is a beauiful Ave Maria composed by Sergei Kvoschinsky, a contemporary children’s song that will make your head spin by the Philippine composer Nilo Alcala, titled Kaisa-isa Niyan and popular choral music by Robbie Williams and Freddie Mercury.

Tickets cost R60.
