Twenty medals for Stellenbosch expo team

The Stellenbosch regional team with IMSTUS staff who accompanied them.

Members of the Stellenbosch regional team can boast with twenty medals, three special awards and a few category prizes after their participation in the 32nd Eskom Expo for Young Scientists/International Science Fair in Boksburg.
More than 750 learners from all over the country participated in this national competition which took place from 4 to 6 October. The Stellenbosch regional group were accompanied to the national event by staff from the Institute for Mathematics and Science Teaching at Stellenbosch University (IMSTUS). Staff of IMSTUS and the Faculty of Science also acted as judges at this competition.
Twenty of the 27 projects entered in the competition by the Stellenbosch expo region, received medals. This includes five gold medals, ten silver medals and five bronze medals. In addition, three special prizes and two category prizes were also won.
“We also keep our fingers crossed for two projects which are currently being considered for participation in an international event,” adds Ms Erika Hoffman from IMSTUS.
“We are very grateful and proud of the learners’ achievements,” she says. “They were true ambassadors who embodied the inventiveness and enthusiasm for science of our region.”
The Stellenbosch expo team comprised 37 learners from schools in the Boland, Overberg, West coast and Southern Cape. They were selected for the Stellenbosch regional team after they excelled at the Stellenbosch regional competition of the Eskom Expo for Young Scientists. The regional event is organised annually by IMSTUS, in collaboration with the Faculty of Science of Stellenbosch University.
Learners could choose to work individually or in pairs on a project in any of 25 different categories. This included topics from the medical, science, mathematics, social sciences and engineering sectors.
