Internasionale lof vir baanbrekerswerk van PhD-gegradueerde in Sielkunde

Die doktorale proefskrif van ‘n PhD-gegradueerde in die Universiteit Stellenbosch (US) se Departement Sielkunde is onlangs as een van tien aangewys wat in 2011 eervolle vermelding van die Internasionale Instituut vir Kwalitatiewe Metodologie (IIQM) ontvang het.

Menige akademikus van oor die hele wêreld stuur jaarliks hul proefskrifte na die Instituut, wat vanaf die Universiteit van Alberta in Kanada werk, om om die IIQM-proefskrifprys mee te ding.

Volgens me Rose Richards, wat aan die US se Taalsentrum verbonde is, het haar navorsing oor die belewing van chroniese siekte gehandel. Sy het haar eie “ervaring van chroniese niersiekte, dialise, oorplanting en die lewe ná oorplanting gebruik om te verken wat dit beteken om die storie van chroniese-siektebelewing te vertel”.

Sy het die navorsingswerk vir haar proefskrif met behulp van die metodologie van outo-etnografie onderneem, wat sowel akademiese as persoonlike skryfwerk behels het. 

“Outo-etnografie het my ook in staat gestel om my eie verhaal en ervarings te kontekstualiseer teen die groter agtergrond van kwalitatiewe gesondheidsnavorsing, siekteverhale, en die toenemende klomp navorsing oor die liminale staat om iets wat eens noodlottig was te oorleef en daarná vir die res van jou lewe met jou saam te dra. Ek het ontdek dat om gesond te word ewe traumaties was as om siek te word,” verduidelik Richards, wat haar graad by die US se Maart-gradeplegtigheid sal ontvang.

“Daarbenewens kon ek met akademiese vorm speel en bepaal hoe ver ek die gebruike van die genre kon verander sonder om nie-akademies te word. Veral daardie deel was groot pret.”

Richards sê sy sy was in die wolke oor die nuus dat haar proefskrif as goed genoeg beskou is om om die prys mee te ding, en heeltemal oorstelp om onder die beste tien te wees.

“Dit is ‘n ontsaglike bekragtiging van my werk. My navorsing het vir my persoonlik ongelooflik baie beteken, en dit voel werklik goed om te weet dat dit vir ander ook van waarde was. Ek was eers bekommerd dat dit wat ek gedoen het, nie juis vir ander nut sou hê nie, maar die feit dat ek die kortlys gehaal het, bewys dat my werk tot ander ook kan spreek.”

Volgens haar studieleier, prof Leslie Swartz van die Departement Sielkunde, is Richards se werk “van die interessantste en oorspronklikste” wat hy al ooit bevoorreg was om oor toesig te hou. “Ek glo dus dat haar baanbrekerswerk dié internasionale erkenning dubbel en dwars verdien,” sê Swartz.

Dit was professor Sally Thorne, ‘n eksaminator en professor in Verpleegkunde aan die Universiteit van Brits-Columbië in Kanada, wat Richards aangemoedig het om haar werk vir oorweging in te dien. Thorne is wêreldbekend vir haar beduidende werk oor kwalitatiewe gesondheidsnavorsingsmetodologie. Die Kanadese organisasie Women’s Executive Network het haar in 2009 as een van Kanada se 100 invloedrykste vroue aangewys.

Thorne het Richards se werk beskryf as een van die “opwindendste en kragtigste stukke oorspronklike wetenskap” wat sy tot dusver onder oë gehad het.

“Die navorsing wou denke ‘loswoel’ by sowel die outeur as haar uiteindelike gehoor, en het dít duidelik op ʼn briljante en boeiende manier reggekry,” skryf Thorne.
