Applied mathematician Ms Sonia Woudberg of the Department of Mathematical Sciences at Stellenbosch University is one of five recipients to receive a prestigious fellowship that aims to enhance women in science in Sub-Saharan Africa. She received one of the inaugural L’Oréal and UNESCO Regional Fellowships for Women in Science in Sub-Saharan Africa, worth $20 000 (around R145 000), at a function in Johannesburg last week.

International academics from the University of Cambridge, the University of British Columbia and the Max Planck Institute are among the seven plenary speakers taking part in the 34th South African Symposium for Numerical and Applied Mathematics (SANUM), which is being held from 15 to 17 March at Stellenbosch University.
