On 22 March 2018, SERAJ welcomed another LLM graduate to the ranks of its alumni. Kathryn de Villiers, supervised by Prof Sandra Liebenberg and Prof Bradley Slade, was awarded the degree cum laude for her thesis entitled “Public interest standing in Bill of Rights litigation under the South African Constitution: Lessons from India”. Her research focused on the development of public interest standing in South Africa and India and how it has been dealt with by the courts in the respective jurisdictions. Her thesis found that South Africa has much to learn from both the advantages and pitfalls of the Indian experience of public interest standing, and also offered recommendations on how public interest standing in South Africa could be strengthened.
Kathryn began her articles of clerkship at Legal Aid South Africa at the start of this year, following her passion of making access to justice a reality for all South Africans. She hopes to pursue a career in public interest litigation.
