Pre- departure:
I’ve always disliked the concept of conformity. It is this dislike that drove me to apply for the Summer School opportunities at the Post Graduate & International Office. I did not simply want to obtain my degree and have an ordinary University experience like many others. I aimed to further my education and gain new knowledge. Despite my second year status, I decided to apply anyway with the faith that my results and campus involvement were adequate enough for me to qualify for this trip. At a later stage I was informed that I was nominated and accepted to participate in the Summer School Program with three other Masters Students. Intimidation does not merely describe how I initially felt; however, the joy of being accepted prompted me to be more confident amongst the fellow South African travellers.

Khegan in Tübingen
It’s incumbent upon me to at least write something about the first couple of weeks I have spent in Germany and more particularly about my time in Tübingen thus far. While making some general observations about the town itself, I will give some rather sporadic, idiosyncratic tips for those interested. The general usefulness of these tips is by no means guaranteed, but rather flows from my own experiences, as well as my own possible stupidity, and obtuse-mindedness. Thereafter, I will briefly give some highlights of my trip thus far.

Priviledge at Konstanz in Germany
Pre-departure:
Preparing to go abroad can be really demanding and stressful. Fortunately for me, I went to Europe (Belgium and the Netherlands) in 2013 and was familiar with the preparatory stage. However, the Germany Embassy has a different visa application process. For the Germany Embassy, the visa application process is handled by Intergate Visalink. As such one needs to be aware of this, as an online application is required – after which, you book an appointment and it is recommended to do this online.
