    Pre-Departure:

Before my departure to the east, I was very much entangled in a thick web of deadlines and administration. Having found out that I was accepted into the summer school program, I was of course overwhelmed with excitement. Following that initial excitement, I realised that we were already half way through April, and that the summer school would take place in June/July, thus putting significant pressure on me to prepare and organize everything. Although being excited once I was accepted, I was somewhat harrowed by the feeling of anxiety knowing that I still had to prepare and sort out my travel plans, visa documents, flight tickets, insurance and all the other necessary formalities. Pre-departure:

I began searching through the summer exchanges but the biggest problem for me was that there were so many places to go to and so many options to choose from! This made my pre-departure planning a lot simpler because I did not have to stress about accommodation or where to find shops for food, etc.

    Pre-departure:

So: is this the part I freak out about the fact that I’m spending my winter holiday in the European summer, OR is this the part where I attempt to finish my 15 page German essay due before I jet off to Leipzig? Both. I’m ecstatic about Europe, but the fact is I still need to take care of my academics.

The “pre-departure” is all about planning. If you’re a person like moi who likes to make lists, now would be a good time to start – you can put VISA at number 1. Underneath VISA you’ll find FLIGHT TICKET, ACCOMMODATION, etc. etc. – it’s quite a tedious list, but believe me, one needs to sort out the visa ASAP and just as a mental note from me to you: it takes time.
