Pre- departure:
I’ve always disliked the concept of conformity. It is this dislike that drove me to apply for the Summer School opportunities at the Post Graduate & International Office. I did not simply want to obtain my degree and have an ordinary University experience like many others. I aimed to further my education and gain new knowledge. Despite my second year status, I decided to apply anyway with the faith that my results and campus involvement were adequate enough for me to qualify for this trip. At a later stage I was informed that I was nominated and accepted to participate in the Summer School Program with three other Masters Students. Intimidation does not merely describe how I initially felt; however, the joy of being accepted prompted me to be more confident amongst the fellow South African travellers.

Preparation for the Summer School
I first heard about the summer school in Austria from a friend of mine who attended it in 2013 and immediately thought it would be a wonderful opportunity to not only study abroad, but also travel during the June/July holidays. This thought sparked numerous sleepless nights and days spend in anguish waiting to hear if I had been accepted.

Alle goeie dinge kom aan hom wat bereid is om te wag
Die voor vertrek tydperk is eintlik ‘n baie prettige tyd. As ek ‘n paar ‘tips’met julle kan deel sal dit die volgende wees:
- Doen jou huiswerk volledig. Met dit bedoel ek kry genoeg kwotasies by verskillende reisagentskappe. Die eerste beskikbare vliegtuigkaartjie is nie altyd die beste nie. Ek het honderde rande gespaar deur net oor die pad te stap en ‘n tweede opinie gekry.
- Moet nie noodwendig die goedkoopste vlug vat nie. Dink bietjie aan watter lugdiens jy gebruik en hoe lank jy gaan oorstaan op ‘n plek soos Dubai. Indien jy ‘n ekstra geldjie het betaal liewer bietjie meer en maak die vlug meer gerieflik.
- Moet nooit bang wees om te vra nie. Vra is vry. Die persoon wat jou vliegtuigkaartjie vir jou boek (bv flight centre) hy is altyd beskikbaar vir vrae oor Visa ens ook.
- Wanneer jy ry om jou visa aansoek te gaan inhandig maak seker jy ry vroegtydig. Dit is nie baie prettig as jy ‘n uur lank aan 8 km ry net omdat dit reen in die Kaap nie.
- Maak dubbelseker of jy kwalifiseer vir ‘n studie visa wat beteken jy spaar geld. Soms is dit beter om sommer net direk die betrokke ambasade te e-pos vir inligting.
