  • Summer School at the University of Hong Kong

    During the June / July holidays Francois Scholtz attended a summer school at the University of Hong. Here is his report:

    Pre-departure

    The application for the University of Hong Kong, or HKU as it is known, is not difficult but it is a long process. The initial application was done quite in advance as compared to some of the other summer exchange programmes offered by Stellenbosch.   • Summer School at Humboldt University – Berlin

    During the June / July holidays Annelien Robberts attended a summer school in Berlin. Here is her story:

    Pre-departure:

    It was the first time I had to organise a trip abroad myself. Not being familiar with all the visa systems, I ended up having to buy two flight tickets. My original flight booking was to Tegel (Berlin) via London. I only had a Schengen Visa which is valid for Europe only. Thus, I came at O.R. Tambo and they refused to let me go through. Luckily both my parents were with me, so with three debit cards we were able to buy a ticket via Amsterdam. The UK requires another visa, which I should have read on my purchased ticket, but my busy exam timetable restricted my time for planning my trip overseas. I reckoned the sooner I bought my ticket, the cheaper it would be, and thus this little detail of another visa escaped me. (more…)

  • Summer School at Karl-Franzen University in Graz

    Gillian Armstrong attended the Graz University Summer Schoolduring July 2011. Here is her report:

    Pre-Departure:

    I was a little nervous about travelling on my own, as this can be something of a daunting task. The best advice I can give is be prepared! I was extremely cautious and so I made sure that all my arrangements were in place before I left. Get a credit card, it is the most useful piece of plastic you will ever own. Print out maps and directions and phone numbers of all of your hotels, and try and get acquainted with the city before you leave. (more…)
