Automatically populate your repository with BioMed Central

BioMed Central is pleased to announce an important new development, designed to help Member institutions to adopt a fully integrated approach to open access by automatically populating their institutional repositories with newly published articles from BioMed Central’s open access journals.

With institutional repositories now widespread, and with institution-wide open access deposit policies becoming ever more common, one of the main challenges remaining is to ensure that institutional repositories are reliably and promptly populated with the latest published articles, in accordance with these policies. To assist our Member institutions, BioMed Central has developed an automated article-deposit system based on the SWORD protocol. Using this system, any open access article published in a BioMed Central journal will be automatically deposited in its official final published form into the author’s institutional repository, offering significant savings of time and effort for both authors and repository administrators. BioMed Central’s SWORD deposit service is offered at no additional charge to all BioMed Central member institutions – for more information see our SWORD deposit service webpage.

The SWORD protocol service also integrates seamlessly with our hosted repository service, Open Repository (OR). Open Repository is a hosted repository service built on top of the open source DSpace platform. BioMed Central Members are entitled a 10% discount on the OR service.  The service offers an easy to manage, flexible solution without the technical burdens associated with hosting a repository in-house.  More information and case studies showing how institutions have lowered costs and improved services by using OR to run their institutional repository are available on the OR website.

If you are interested in the SWORD deposit service then please complete and return the attached requirements form and we will be happy to arrange this for you.  Alternatively if your institution would like to know more about the possibility of hosting its repository with Open Repository, please do get in touch.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Best regards,

Matthew Cockerill

Managing Director
BioMed Central
