Studies in Digital Heritage is a brand new open access journal publishing peer-reviewed articles, monographs, and special issues treating the entire gamut of topics in the field of Digital Heritage. The journal is hosted on an Open Journals System hosting platform at Indiana University and charges no article processing fees.

The NRF ORCID statement
On Friday 7 April the National Research Foundation (NRF) distributed an ORCID statement requiring all researchers and students applying for funding and rating to have an ORCID identifier. The NRF membership of ORCID ensures that researchers and their institutions will benefit from access to and integration with the ORCID registry. They are in the process of integrating ORCID into all application and grant management processes and systems. They are also considering integration benefits such as automated processes for uploading research output records into a researcher’s profile and research reports. What is ORCID?
An ORCID iD comprises a 16-digit identification number which uniquely distinguishes one author from another (e.g. http://orcid.org/0000-0001-5109-3700). In doing so it ensures that scientific authors are permanently connected to their online research activities throughout their research careers.
ORCID and Stellenbosch University
You will know that Stellenbosch University has been a member of the Open Researcher and Contributor ID (ORCID) network since 2015 and we would like you to associate (“connect”) your ORCID and SU network identities to allow for the integration of ORCID iDs across systems in a managed way.
While it is now compulsory to have an ORCID iD when applying for NRF-funding or –rating, Stellenbosch University would like to request you to create your ORCID record and connect it to the Stellenbosch University integration at the same time. Die Nasionale Navorsingstigting (NNS) het op Vrydag 7 April ‘n verklaring uitgereik oor die vereiste om ‘n ORCID iD te gebruik in alle befondsings- en graderingsaansoeke. Die NNS se lidmaatskap tot ORCID verseker dat navorsers en hul instellings voordeel sal trek uit toegang en integrasie met die ORCID-netwerk. The South African Sustainable Development Knowledge Hub – a first for Africa – was launched at the University of Pretoria’s Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS) in Johannesburg, South Africa on 16 March 2017.
The Hub is the first to connect African policy makers and development partners with the research needed to implement the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the African Union’s Agenda 2063. The beta version of the Hub is available at https://sdgknowledgehub.org/and currently contains the texts of 621 items, tagged in terms of SDG and Agenda 2063 aspiration. It is hosted by the University of Pretoria.
According to Minister Jeff Radebe, who delivered the keynote address at the opening, “the Sustainable Development Knowledge Hub is an online African initiative that focuses on collecting and disseminating relevant research on the implementation of Agenda 2063 and the SDGs in South Africa. I am told that this is the only Hub of its kind on the African continent and it provides access to the most recent and relevant South African research as an existing knowledge base to domesticate the SDGs”.
The Hub collects all recent publicly available research produced at South African universities that deal with implementing elements of Agenda 2063’s Aspirations and the SDGs. Articles are found by applying 401 search terms to research produced from 2014 to 2016. Of particular importance are articles that are technically accessible, and that focus on implementation.

An interesting study regarding predatory journals has been published.
“Potential predatory and legitimate biomedical journals: can you tell the difference? A cross-sectional comparison” by Shamseer et al identifies 13 evidence-based characteristics by which predatory journals may potentially be distinguished from presumed legitimate journals. These may be useful for authors who are assessing journals for possible submission or for others, such as universities evaluating candidates’ publications as part of the hiring process. The 13 characteristics are summarized in the article:

Stellenbosch University has joined the Institutional Membership Programme of MDPI (Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute), an academic open-access publisher.
In terms of the membership programme, corresponding authors associated with the University will receive a 10% discount on MDPI’s Article Processing Charges.
SU authors who publish with MDPI will be invoiced directly. Once the invoice has been paid, the author may apply for a refund from the Open Access Publication Fund, in agreement with the policy of the Fund.
If approved, the refund will not be more than 50% of the APCs for SU-authors.
