SUNScholar, number one position in Africa

Stellenbosch University’s Institutional Repository, SUNScholar, has recently reached the number one position in Africa in the 2016 July edition of the ranking of open access repositories.

The ranking is performed by “The Ranking Web of World Repositories“. SUNScholar is managed by the Library and Information Service at Stellenbosch University. Not only does the repository hold first position on the continent, but it occupies an overall 84th position worldwide among 2275 repositories.  In the ‘instutitional respositories (IR) only’ ranking, SUNScholar comes in at 68th position.

Professor Eugene Cloete, Vice-Rector: Research, Innovation and Postgraduate Studies, says “The achievement of the Library and Information Service in strengthening and developing SUNScholar is significant. This achievement supports Stellenbosch University’s commitment to Open Access to scientific information and the promotion of research output and innovation as a central goal of Research, Innovation and Postgraduate Studies.”

The aim of SUNScholar is to improve the visibility and access to Stellenbosch University’s research output. Research outcomes are openly shared with the rest of the world, as well as preserved in a central archive. “Achieving this number one ranking is indeed proof that SU research output is shared with as wide an audience as possible and that African research is increasingly accessible globally”, says Ellen Tise, Senior Director of the Library and Information Service.

The aim of the Ranking Web of World Repositories is “to support Open Access initiatives and therefore the free access to scientific publications in an electronic form and to other academic material. The web indicators are used here to measure the global visibility and impact of the scientific repositories”*. The Ranking considers specific criteria when assessing repositories. These include size, visibility, rich files and scholar. The “scholar” criterion refers to the total number of items from the repository obtained from Google Scholar.

What researchers should know about Open Access to scholarly research

Open Access (OA) seeks to make academic research freely available to everyone regardless of financial or geographic boundaries. Studies have shown a significant increase in citations when research outputs are made openly available. While OA is gaining strength and popularity as a new model for dissemination of information, there are still a number of issues such as pricing models and author’s rights which are not completely resolved.

You are invited to a short seminar on OA co-hosted at the HSRC and CSIR by SANRIC and NeDICC. The seminar, which will take place during OA Week (an international event now in its 8th year), will provide an invaluable chance to connect with the global momentum aimed at the open sharing of information. It is specifically targeted at researchers from South African research institutions but all interested in OA are welcome to attend.

Date: 20 October 2015
Time: 08:00-12:00
Venues: HSRC, Pretoria
HSRC, Cape Town
HSRC, Durban
CSIR Knowledge Commons, Pretoria

Attendance is free of charge however registration is required by Thursday, 15th October 2015. The programme provides further detail.

About SANRIC: The South African National Research Information Consortium (SANRIC) is a collaborative body which strives, through access to information, to enable and support globally competitive research. (Members of SANRIC are Library and Information professionals from the nine Science Councils in South Africa and the National Research Foundation)

About NeDICC: A network of data and information curation communities. NeDICC aims to promote the development and use of research data and information curation standards and practices to ensure the long term preservation and accessibility of digital research outputs in support of e-Research.

Sponsored by SANRIC, Open Access & NeDICC.

SUNScholar News July 2014

Dear Colleagues

SUNScholar International Ranking
SUNScholar was ranked as 2nd in Africa, and 146 globally (out of a total of 1 983) during the bi-annual July ranking of open access institutional repositories. This is an improvement from our 3nd place at the beginning of this year. We use this ranking as a benchmarking tool, and as one of many pointers to guide us in our effort to apply best practice.
Visibility of research output is one of the most important variables measured. Approximately 13 000 items on SUNScholar have full text attached, while the rest are bibliographic records imported from the SU Research Reports from previous years. Hopefully – with time – we will be able to retrospectively attach the full text to these articles. SUNScholar was officially implemented at the beginning of 2010, and we would not have done this well if it wasn’t for your cooperation and support. Thank you so much. More info at http://repositories.webometrics.info/en/Ranking_africa

Management of SUNScholar
This just a note to let you know that I’ve accepted an offer for the position of Planning Manager at the Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf) from 1 October 2014. I will be available until the end of September for last matters that needs my attention.

From 1 October, Mrs Elna Randall will be handling managerial, strategic and official matters related to all Open Scholarship Services (SUNScholar, SUNJournals, SUNConferences). She can be contacted at:

E-mail: elnar@sun.ac.za
Tel: 021 808 4641

For all operational issues, you can still contact Paulette Talliard:

E-mail: plt@sun.ac.za
Tel: 021 808 9046

All the best, and I am looking forward to work with you in future, although in a different capacity.

With kind regards
Ina

Beste Kollegas

SUNScholar Internasionale Meting
Baie dankie daarvoor. Meer inligting is beskikbaar by http://repositories.webometrics.info/en/Ranking_africa

Sy kan gekontak word by:

E-pos: elnar@sun.ac.za
Tel: 021 808 4641

Ina
