Open Access to Research Information 26 October 2011 13:00 –
This is an important date in our calendar, and this year we plan to have two international and two local experts to address all your concerns re open access, copyright, impact factors, peer-review, and many more. We also plan to launch open access scholarly journals to be hosted by SU! More information available at http://oa.sun.ac.za
During the past 5 years, there was a significant growth in libraries implementing institutional repositories, and it is still growing (http://www.opendoar.org ). Institutional repositories have been implemented to digitally preserve and archive the research assets of individual institutions, but also to provide open access to research conducted by members of the research communities from these institutions. The Open Access and Open Source Software movements have gained rapid momentum world over. Many institutions and organizations are setting up open access repositories using open source software, following open standards. There are a number of free open source software products available for developing digital libraries, and DSpace (http://www.dspace.org ) is one of the most popular software developed jointly by MIT Libraries and HP labs. DSpace is a digital asset management system. It helps create, index and retrieve various forms of digital content. DSpace is adaptable to different community needs. Interoperability between systems is built-in and it adheres to international standards for metadata.
This workshop is planned to meet the growing interest in implementing repositories using DSpace open source software, and to assist institutions who haven’t implemented or are in the early stages of implementing an institutional repository.

Research articles on SUNScholar
During the past month we managed to import the bibliographic details of approximately 7 200 articles to SUNScholar. This in an effort to centrally archive and digitally preserve research output by researchers from SU. It is done in collaboration with the publishers.
If you can provide us with the full text of these research articles, it would be highly appreciated. We are specifically interested in the post-print versions. You are most welcome to e-mail it to scholar@sun.ac.za . Many thanks for your help and assisting in populating SUNScholar!
Inaugural addresses
Following the demand, we also archive copies of inaugural addresses on SUNScholar. You are welcome to forward any copies you might have (also available from the Unit for Document Design (Mr Philip du Plesiss E-mail: philipdp@sun.ac.za)) , to scholar@sun.ac.za
Signatures on e-versions of theses/dissertations
Please take note that no signatures are to be added to the electronic versions of theses/dissertations when submitting it to SUNScholar.

Colleagues
An update re SUNScholar activities.
Scopus export
During the past month we have exported the bibliographic details of approximately 7 200 articles to SUNScholar. We are now in the process of attaching full text to these records and clearing copyright, which will take up quite some time. What is very impressive is that the SUNScholar item comes up first when conducting a Google search for a specific title, after the metadata has been fully edited and because of the way SUNScholar was set up.
If you have access to the post-print (peer-reviewed, and just before being published) of these entries, please feel free to assist us in any way to get hold of the post-print copy. You are welcome to conduct an author search for researchers within your department, to see which of their articles appear in SUNScholar.
The current item count on SUNScholar: 12 486 items
Inet Key to access SUNScholar
Since Google Analytics runs in the background, you need to have your inet-key open when accessing SUNScholar. IT has been made aware of this, and it requires a change in IT policy.
