The Sustainable IT blog will with time host a debate for Stellenbosch University’s community about the sustainability of the university’s information technology (IT) operations and best practices. In short, sustainable IT is about minimising material and energy throughputs in providing computing and network platforms and services – and also about how IT can be used to minimise throughputs elsewhere in the institution (by minimising travel through hosting virtual meetings, for example). In order to minimise throughputs we need to consider the full lifecycle of computers and networks, from procuring energy-efficient devices, through energy-efficient and effective operations to responsible refurbishment, recycling and disposal of e-waste.
Met tyd sal hierdie “blog” ‘n debat onder the Universiteit Stellenbosch-gemeenskap omtrent die volhoubaarheid van die universiteit se informasietegnologie (IT) bedryf en beste praktyke, fasiliteer. Volhoubare IT gaan oor die minimering van materiaal- en energie-deursette in die voorsiening van rekenaar- en netwerk-platvorms en -dienste – asook hoe IT aangewend kan word om deursette elders in die universiteit te minimeer (soos bv. deur reise te minimeer deur meer gebruik te maak van virtuele vegarderings). Om die deursette te kan minimeer moet daar na die volledige lewenssiklus van rekenaars en netwerke gekyk word, vanaf die aankoop van energiedoeltreffende apparatuur, deur energie-doeltreffende en effektiewe bedryf, tot opknapping, herwinning en verantwoordelike wegdoening van “e-waste”.
