{"id":2199,"date":"2016-10-22T13:27:57","date_gmt":"2016-10-22T13:27:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.sun.ac.za\/antarcticlegacy\/?p=2199"},"modified":"2016-10-22T14:08:51","modified_gmt":"2016-10-22T14:08:51","slug":"looking-ahead-alsa-attends-a-sanap-strategic-workshop","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.sun.ac.za\/antarcticlegacy\/2016\/10\/22\/looking-ahead-alsa-attends-a-sanap-strategic-workshop\/","title":{"rendered":"Looking ahead: ALSA attends a SANAP strategic workshop"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Earlier this week South Africa&#8217;s National Research Foundation (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nrf.ac.za\/\" target=\"_blank\">NRF<\/a>) hosted a two-day strategic workshop to discuss a way forward with academic and other scientists who conduct research within the South African National Antarctic Programme (SANAP).<\/p>\n<p>The workshop was held at the South African Astronomical Observatory (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.saao.ac.za\/\" target=\"_blank\">SAAO<\/a>), a NRF National Research Facility, in Observatory, a suburb of Cape Town . \u00a0The NRF&#8217;s Tracy Klarenbeek, Professional Officer,\u00a0Knowledge Fields Development \u00a0led the workshop with support from Dr Gilbert Siko,\u00a0Director: Marine and Polar Research, Palaeosciences of the\u00a0Department of Science and Technology (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dst.gov.za\/\" target=\"_blank\">DST<\/a>).<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2212\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2212\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.sun.ac.za\/antarcticlegacy\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/189\/files\/2016\/10\/004.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2212 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.sun.ac.za\/antarcticlegacy\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/189\/files\/2016\/10\/004-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"004\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.sun.ac.za\/antarcticlegacy\/files\/2016\/10\/004-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.sun.ac.za\/antarcticlegacy\/files\/2016\/10\/004-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.sun.ac.za\/antarcticlegacy\/files\/2016\/10\/004-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2212\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tracy Klarenbeek gets the meeting started<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Several veteran SANAP researchers gave\u00a0thought-provoking introductory talks to lead the ensuing discussions. \u00a0Extraordinary Professor and Senior Research Fellow <a href=\"http:\/\/www.marionseals.com\/people\/\" target=\"_blank\">Marth\u00e1n Bester<\/a> of the University of Pretoria&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.up.ac.za\/mammal-research-institute\" target=\"_blank\">Mammal Research Institute<\/a>, who for many years led the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.marionseals.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Marion Island Marine Mammal Programme<\/a> before retiring \u00a0last year, gave a \u00a0challenging talk that delved into his long experience to compare and comment on changes within SANAP from the 1970s to the present day.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2214\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2214\" style=\"width: 217px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.sun.ac.za\/antarcticlegacy\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/189\/files\/2016\/10\/Marthan-Bester.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2214 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.sun.ac.za\/antarcticlegacy\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/189\/files\/2016\/10\/Marthan-Bester-217x300.jpg\" alt=\"marthan-bester\" width=\"217\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.sun.ac.za\/antarcticlegacy\/files\/2016\/10\/Marthan-Bester-217x300.jpg 217w, https:\/\/blogs.sun.ac.za\/antarcticlegacy\/files\/2016\/10\/Marthan-Bester.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 217px) 100vw, 217px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2214\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Marth\u00e1n Bester<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Youth was also represented among the speakers with the Antarctic Legacy of South Africa&#8217;s Anch\u00e9 Louw introducing the idea of \u00a0a virtual South African Antarctic Museum. \u00a0In the absence of a dedicated polar museum in the country ( even though Cape Town is recognized as an Antarctic Gateway City) \u00a0a virtual museum will help fill a gap in creating awareness of South Africa&#8217;s past and present activities &#8220;down south&#8221; among the country&#8217;s population. \u00a0At the same time, ALSA&#8217;s archivist Ria Olivier was in Oslo, Norway describing the virtual museum concept to an international audience at\u00a0the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.polarmuseumsnetwork.org\/conference\/\" target=\"_blank\">1st Polar Museums Network Conference<\/a>\u00a0(<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.sun.ac.za\/antarcticlegacy\/2016\/10\/18\/alsa-attending-the-polar-museums-network-inaugural-conference\/\" target=\"_blank\">click here<\/a>).<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2213\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2213\" style=\"width: 427px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.sun.ac.za\/antarcticlegacy\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/189\/files\/2016\/10\/006.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2213\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.sun.ac.za\/antarcticlegacy\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/189\/files\/2016\/10\/006-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"006\" width=\"427\" height=\"320\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.sun.ac.za\/antarcticlegacy\/files\/2016\/10\/006-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.sun.ac.za\/antarcticlegacy\/files\/2016\/10\/006-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.sun.ac.za\/antarcticlegacy\/files\/2016\/10\/006-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 427px) 100vw, 427px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2213\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Anche Louw explains the virtual museum concept<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Discussions were forthright and wide-ranging on how best to continue to undertake world-class research in Antarctica, at the sub-Antarctic Prince Edward Islands and at sea in the Southern Ocean, with a consensus developing from the SANAP research community present on what the future direction should be. \u00a0It was pleasing to discern general support from the workshop attendees for a continuation of the Antarctic Legacy project after 2017 \u00a0and ideas and suggestions for its future were aired.<\/p>\n<p>The workshop ended with a consideration of the expected 2017 call for project proposals for the next three-year (2018-2020) funding cycle for SANAP.<\/p>\n<p>Feature photograph: \u00a0SANAP researchers gather for the strategic workshop. \u00a0Left: Tracy Klarenbeek (NRF, back turned);
