ALSA was invited to attend the launch of \u201cAntarctic cities and the global commons: rethinking the gateways\u201d project, hosted by the Western Sydney University (Institute for Culture and Society). The launch was held in the Lord Mayor\u2019s Court Room, Hobart Town Hall, Tasmania and lead by the deputy Lord Mayor of Hobart, Ron Christie.<\/p>\n
This project is set out to enhance the roles of the official Gateway Cities to Antarctica. These cities are Cape Town (South Africa), Christchurch (New Zealand), Hobart (Australia), Punta Arenas (Chile) and Ushuaia (Argentina). This project is also set out to reframe the way these cities see themselves in relation to each other and to Antarctica. The project will start off by focusing on three of the five gateway cities: Hobart, Christchurch and Punta Arenas. The project is lead by Associate Professor Juan Francisco Salazar of Western Sydney University.<\/p>\n
