What would you do if you have to spend more than a year in an isolated place?\u00a0 Overwinterers<\/a> at SANAE<\/a> and on Marion<\/a> and Gough<\/a> Island tried their hand at writing poems.\u00a0 On World Poetry day I had a look at the poems that were preserved on the digital archive of the Antarctic Legacy of South Africa<\/a> and below I share a few excerpts with you, (click on the link to read the full poem).<\/p>\n

Poetry reaffirms our common humanity by revealing to us that individuals, everywhere in the world, share the same questions and feelings. Poetry is the mainstay of oral tradition and, over centuries, can communicate the innermost values of diverse cultures.<\/em>”<\/p>\n

MARION JULY 1966<\/em><\/a> - Jim Lilly<\/em>\r\n\"\"<\/a>On Marion one wet and stormy Sunday night,<\/em>\r\nThe wind was blowing with all its might.<\/em>\r\nWhen for some reason James awoke,<\/em>\r\nTo find his room filled with smoke,<\/em>\r\nRushing out there met his gaze,<\/em>\r\nThe most fearful thing - the place ablaze.<\/em>\r\nWithout the time to don more attire,<\/em>\r\nHe ran along and shouted fire!!!<\/em>\r\nThis awoke Braam and his crew,<\/em>.....<\/em><\/pre>\n
