This station is managed and administered by DEFF. Marion Island lies<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.sun.ac.za\/antarcticlegacy\/files\/2020\/03\/globe-with-stations.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-5012 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.sun.ac.za\/antarcticlegacy\/files\/2020\/03\/globe-with-stations-300x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"202\" height=\"202\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.sun.ac.za\/antarcticlegacy\/files\/2020\/03\/globe-with-stations-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.sun.ac.za\/antarcticlegacy\/files\/2020\/03\/globe-with-stations-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/blogs.sun.ac.za\/antarcticlegacy\/files\/2020\/03\/globe-with-stations.png 564w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 202px) 100vw, 202px\" \/><\/a> at 46\u00b0S, 37\u00b0E in the Southern Indian Ocean, 2160 km from East Pier, Cape Town Harbour. \u00a0The older of the two bases has been there since January 1948, erected\u00a0 after South Africa annexed and occupied the Prince Edward Islands. At 2160 km south of Cape Town, the islands are also the S<strong>outhernmost part of South Africa<\/strong>. The new base, constructed in 2008, includes laboratories for biological research and meteorological facilities. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sanap.ac.za\/explore#research\">Research<\/a> on the island focuses on bird and plant life, as well as the aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems found there.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.sun.ac.za\/antarcticlegacy\/about-2\/marion-station\/\">History<\/a>: Discovered in 1663 by Barent Barentzoon Lam of the Dutch East India Company, it wasn\u2019t until 100 years later that the Islands were revisited, this time by a French naval officer named M. M. Marion du Fresne. It isn\u2019t clear how it happened, but by the 19th Century, sealers were calling the larger of the two Prince Edward Islands Marion, and the name stuck. The smaller is now known as Prince Edward Island.
