Will South Africa celebrate Antarctic Day today?<\/strong><\/p>\n

South Africa is one\u00a0of the 12 original signatories to the Antarctic Treaty<\/a>\u00a0adopted in 1959 and is a founder member of the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR<\/a>). \u00a0The Antarctic Treaty was drafted to ensure that no dispute arises over the ownership of Antarctica.<\/p>\n

Antarctica Day<\/strong><\/p>\n

Antarctica Day<\/a> was inaugurated in 2010 to celebrate \u00a0signature of the Antarctic Treaty on 1\u00a0December 1959, which was adopted\u00a0“with the interests of science and the progress of all mankind.” \u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

“With a vision for young people to be aware of how countries can build on their common interests \u2013 Antarctica Day is an opportunity to demonstrate how diverse nations can work together peacefully, continuously using science as a global language of cooperation for decision making beyond national boundaries.”<\/em><\/p>\n

South Africa’s involvement in Antarctica<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"SANAE-IV\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Currently there are\u00a0no official Antarctica Day celebrations in South Africa. However, on 3 December the S.A. Agulhas II<\/em>\u00a0will depart from the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town to SANAE IV base in Antarctica. \u00a0Every year a new SANAE team departs for a period of 14 months around the first week of December.<\/p>\n

South Africa also maintains bases on Marion Island and Gough Island in the Southern Ocean . \u00a0Marion Island and Prince Edward Island form the Prince Edward Islands group, South Africa’s only overseas territory.<\/p>\n

So perhaps next year South Africa will celebrate international Antarctica Day. \u00a0The Antarctic Legacy of South Africa will be there to help!<\/p>\n
