{"id":6384,"date":"2022-03-03T04:54:57","date_gmt":"2022-03-03T04:54:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.sun.ac.za\/antarcticlegacy\/?p=6384"},"modified":"2022-03-03T05:11:44","modified_gmt":"2022-03-03T05:11:44","slug":"world-wildlife-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.sun.ac.za\/antarcticlegacy\/2022\/03\/03\/world-wildlife-day\/","title":{"rendered":"World Wildlife Day"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>WWD 2022 Theme: &#8220;Recovering key species within ecosystems&#8221;<\/h2>\n<p>The invasive mice on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sanap.ac.za\/explore\/stations#marion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Marion Island<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sanap.ac.za\/explore\/stations#gough\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gough Island<\/a> have devastating effects on seabirds that breed in the sub-Antarctic, affecting the ecosystems on these islands.<\/p>\n<p>The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rspb.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">RSPB<\/a>) has kicked off the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goughisland.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gough Island Restoration programme<\/a> in the austral summer of 2021, in an effort of saving seabird species from extinction. Read the latest update of this programme <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goughisland.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>On Marion Island, the <a href=\"https:\/\/mousefreemarion.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mouse-free Marion Project<\/a>, initiated by the South African Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dffe.gov.za\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">DFFE<\/a>) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.birdlife.org.za\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BirdLife South Africa<\/a>, &#8220;aims to remove the mice from Marion Island in 2024&#8221;.
