{"id":8741,"date":"2024-03-25T14:24:52","date_gmt":"2024-03-25T14:24:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.sun.ac.za\/antarcticlegacy\/?p=8741"},"modified":"2024-03-25T14:24:52","modified_gmt":"2024-03-25T14:24:52","slug":"meteorology-day-23-march","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.sun.ac.za\/antarcticlegacy\/2024\/03\/25\/meteorology-day-23-march\/","title":{"rendered":"Meteorology Day 23 March"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wmo.int\/site\/world-meteorological-day-2024\">International Meteorology Day<\/a> is celebrated on 23 March every year and it is an opportunity to appreciate the efforts made in the field of meteorology and weather forecasting, as well as to raise awareness about climate change and its impact on our planet.&nbsp;&nbsp;The theme for World Meteorological Day in 2024 is <em><strong>&#8220;At the frontline of climate action.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/strong><\/em> This year&#8217;s theme aims to encourage global cooperation, coordination, and communication related to weather, climate, and water to help society gain a deeper understanding of the weather and climate system in light of global warming.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.sun.ac.za\/antarcticlegacy\/files\/2024\/03\/met-day-2024-stations.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-8759 \" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.sun.ac.za\/antarcticlegacy\/files\/2024\/03\/met-day-2024-stations.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"740\" height=\"162\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.sun.ac.za\/antarcticlegacy\/files\/2024\/03\/met-day-2024-stations.jpg 913w, https:\/\/blogs.sun.ac.za\/antarcticlegacy\/files\/2024\/03\/met-day-2024-stations-300x66.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.sun.ac.za\/antarcticlegacy\/files\/2024\/03\/met-day-2024-stations-768x168.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 740px) 100vw, 740px\" \/><\/a>South Africa is at the frontline with our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sanap.ac.za\/expeditions#structure\">Overwintering teams<\/a> of&nbsp; the South African National Antarctic Programme as meteorological technicians and assistants on Antarctic and Marion and Gough Island. The&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/marine.weathersa.co.za\/Observations_RemoteStations.html\">South African Weather service<\/a>&nbsp;has a proud history of research and operations in the sub-Antarctic and on Antarctica. For more than 60 years, the SAWS has sent personnel to monitor critical weather and climate parameters in these inhospitable regions.
