{"id":1976,"date":"2023-12-20T11:32:49","date_gmt":"2023-12-20T09:32:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.sun.ac.za\/bibnuus\/?p=1976"},"modified":"2023-12-20T11:32:49","modified_gmt":"2023-12-20T09:32:49","slug":"woordfees-manuscripts-section-lecture-words-that-grow-jj-smith-collection","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.sun.ac.za\/bibnuus\/en\/2023\/12\/20\/woordfees-manuscripts-section-lecture-words-that-grow-jj-smith-collection\/","title":{"rendered":"Woordfees Manuscripts Section Lecture:  \u201cWords that grow\u201d &#8211; JJ Smith collection"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1991\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.sun.ac.za\/bibnuus\/files\/2023\/12\/IMG_5443-scaled-e1703062570920-300x210.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"636\" height=\"445\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.sun.ac.za\/bibnuus\/files\/2023\/12\/IMG_5443-scaled-e1703062570920-300x210.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.sun.ac.za\/bibnuus\/files\/2023\/12\/IMG_5443-scaled-e1703062570920-1024x716.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.sun.ac.za\/bibnuus\/files\/2023\/12\/IMG_5443-scaled-e1703062570920-768x537.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.sun.ac.za\/bibnuus\/files\/2023\/12\/IMG_5443-scaled-e1703062570920-1536x1074.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/blogs.sun.ac.za\/bibnuus\/files\/2023\/12\/IMG_5443-scaled-e1703062570920-2048x1432.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 636px) 100vw, 636px\" \/>The thirteenth Manuscripts Section Lecture was presented during the SU Woordfees on 9 October this year as part of the discourse series, <em>From the library archives<\/em>.\u00a0 The lecture, with the title \u201cWords that grow\u201d, focused on the JJ Smith collection.<\/p>\n<p>The three speakers were outstanding and highlighted various angles of the <em>Woordeboek van die Afrikaanse Taal<\/em> (Dictionary of the Afrikaans Language), commonly known as the WAT as it has grown and developed over the years.<\/p>\n<p>The first speaker, Ms Mimi Seyffert-Wirth, gave an overview of the JJ Smith collection (Ms 333), highlighting some of the interesting documents that focus on the history, orthography, and spelling of the Afrikaans language.<\/p>\n<p>JJ Smith (1883-1949) was not only the first editor of the WAT, but also became the first professor in Afrikaans and Dutch at Stellenbosch University in 1919 and was the first editor of the Afrikaans magazine, <em>Die Huisgenoot.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2012 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.sun.ac.za\/bibnuus\/files\/2023\/12\/IMG_5477-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"323\" height=\"182\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.sun.ac.za\/bibnuus\/files\/2023\/12\/IMG_5477-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.sun.ac.za\/bibnuus\/files\/2023\/12\/IMG_5477-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.sun.ac.za\/bibnuus\/files\/2023\/12\/IMG_5477-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.sun.ac.za\/bibnuus\/files\/2023\/12\/IMG_5477-1536x864.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/blogs.sun.ac.za\/bibnuus\/files\/2023\/12\/IMG_5477-2048x1152.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 323px) 100vw, 323px\" \/>The second speaker, Dr Willem Botha, joined the editorial staff of the WAT in 1988 and retired in 2022 as Editor-in-Chief and Executive Director. He gave an overview of the history, growth, marketing, and move to the digital platform of the WAT.<\/p>\n<p>The last speaker was Dr Gerda Odendaal, Co-editor of the WAT since 2016.
