This has led to the situation that invasion biologists are having an increasingly hard time to maintain an overview of the discipline\u2019s important ideas. The field is thus in need of navigation tools that provide orientation.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1696\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1696\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1696\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.sun.ac.za\/cib\/files\/2020\/04\/Participants.png\" alt=\"Participants in 2018 Berlin workshop\" width=\"200\" height=\"139\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.sun.ac.za\/cib\/files\/2020\/04\/Participants.png 668w, https:\/\/blogs.sun.ac.za\/cib\/files\/2020\/04\/Participants-580x404.png 580w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1696\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">C\u00b7I\u00b7B researchers participated in the 2018 workshop in Berlin that laid the foundation for the consensus map of invasion hypotheses<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"text\">Several C\u00b7I\u00b7B researchers, including C\u00b7I\u00b7B core team member Sabrina Kumschick, former C\u00b7I\u00b7B postdoctoral associates Florencia Yannelli and Wolf-Christian Saul as well as C\u00b7I\u00b7B associates Christoph Kueffer, Franz Essl and Petr Py\u0161ek, teamed up with an international group of invasion biologists led by Martin Enders and Jonathan Jeschke from the Free University of Berlin and the Leibniz-Institute of Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries (IGB) to develop and apply a novel consensus method that allows to map hypotheses in a research field.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text\">The method that the team developed can be applied in any scientific discipline, hence this first application in invasion biology also serves as a proof-of-concept. The researchers started by defining 39 invasion hypotheses and then followed nine steps to create a network of these hypotheses. The network groups hypotheses in clusters that share a particular perspective on biological invasions. Users of the map can thus quickly locate similar, redundant or contradictory concepts about invasive species.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text\">In future, the team aims to also map hypotheses in related research fields, such as restoration ecology or urban ecology, and to provide the conceptual maps as interactive tools online (see <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hi-knowledge.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">www.hi-knowledge.org<\/a>).<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"text\">Jonathan Jeschke, senior author of the study, added: <em>\u201cOur vision is to eventually create an open and interactive atlas of knowledge covering all scientific disciplines. This can only be achieved by a large inter- and transdisciplinary team.
