{"id":2704,"date":"2017-01-10T12:39:46","date_gmt":"2017-01-10T10:39:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.sun.ac.za\/cib\/?p=2704"},"modified":"2020-07-17T12:54:20","modified_gmt":"2020-07-17T10:54:20","slug":"effects-invasive-alien-pine-on-lizard-communities-in-fynbos","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.sun.ac.za\/cib\/effects-invasive-alien-pine-on-lizard-communities-in-fynbos\/","title":{"rendered":"Effects of invasive alien pine trees on lizard communities in fynbos"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Invasions by alien pine trees (<em>Pinus <\/em>spp.) can have a negative impact on native lizard species by changing their native habitat, according to a recent C\u00b7I\u00b7B study published in <a href=\"http:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s00442-016-3726-y\"><em>Oecologia<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The research by former C\u00b7I\u00b7B student, Elsje Schreuder and C\u00b7I\u00b7B Core Team Member, <a href=\"https:\/\/scholar.google.co.za\/citations?user=i0T9UOsAAAAJ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Susana Clusella-Trullas<\/a>, found that pine plantations and native fynbos vegetation invaded by dense stands of pine trees had fewer lizard species and less individuals when compared to fynbos habitats.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2705\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2705\" style=\"width: 622px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2705\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.sun.ac.za\/cib\/files\/2020\/07\/ElsjeShcreuder.png\" alt=\"Elsje Schreuder in mountain fynbos with a Cape skink (Trachylepis capensis)\" width=\"622\" height=\"467\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.sun.ac.za\/cib\/files\/2020\/07\/ElsjeShcreuder.png 622w, https:\/\/blogs.sun.ac.za\/cib\/files\/2020\/07\/ElsjeShcreuder-580x435.png 580w, https:\/\/blogs.sun.ac.za\/cib\/files\/2020\/07\/ElsjeShcreuder-400x300.png 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 622px) 100vw, 622px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2705\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Elsje Schreuder in mountain fynbos with a Cape skink (Trachylepis capensis) (Photo credit: Sonja Schreuder)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Lizards rely on external heat sources, for example sunlight or warm rock surfaces, to keep their body temperature at levels suitable for functions such as mating and hunting prey. This makes them particularly sensitive to changes in their surrounding habitat. For example, a reduction in the availability of \u201cwarm\u201d and \u201ccool\u201d microsites \u00a0or changes in the configuration of these thermal opportunities can impair the maintenance of preferred body temperatures. These changes can readily translate into periods of body temperatures that fall outside an optimal range, imposing restrictions on activities such as mating, reproducing and feeding. This study aimed to test the effects of pine invasions on native fynbos thermal landscapes and how these effects can alter lizard communities.<\/p>\n<p>The study was conducted in several areas with different levels of pine invasions. Habitat types included pristine fynbos, semi-invaded fynbos with few, small pine saplings, heavily invaded fynbos with many, large\u00a0<em>pine tree<\/em><em>\u00a0<\/em>saplings, and \u00a0pine forests. A detailed mapping of thermal opportunities was undertaken at each site by deploying numerous lizard copper replicas and by incorporating the heterogeneity of sun and shade patches in each habitat type. Arthropods were also collected to see whether invasive alien pine trees indirectly affect lizards by altering food resources.<\/p>\n<p>The authors found that the number of different lizard species as well as the abundance of lizards (number of individuals) was lower in pine forests than in fynbos areas. Species diversity was also reduced in fynbos that was heavily invaded by pine trees compared to native fynbos. Arthropod composition varied greatly between habitat types, suggesting that lizards that specialize most on particular prey are likely to be more vulnerable to pine invasions. Overall, this study demonstrated that pine tree invasions have an impact on lizard communities both through temperature changes and through availability of resources. These effects were shown to change drastically among sites and seasons and therefore, long-term examinations are needed to obtain a complete picture of impacts of alien plants on reptile communities.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u00a0<\/em><em>\u201cThe fynbos areas provide nooks and crannies for lizards to get away from the sun, but also enough sun-exposed surfaces, whereas the invaded areas are dominated by taller and denser canopies of pine trees that prevent sunlight from coming through<\/em>,\u201d said Elsje Schreuder. \u00a0<em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em>\u201c<em>Pine trees pose a threat to lizard communities through their effects on thermal opportunities for behavioural regulation and prey abundance.
