{"id":2780,"date":"2016-06-06T10:28:07","date_gmt":"2016-06-06T08:28:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.sun.ac.za\/cib\/?p=2780"},"modified":"2020-07-30T10:49:04","modified_gmt":"2020-07-30T08:49:04","slug":"new-approaches-to-compile-100-worst-lists","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.sun.ac.za\/cib\/new-approaches-to-compile-100-worst-lists\/","title":{"rendered":"New approaches to compile \u201c100 of the worst\u201d lists"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A recent paper by Sabrina Kumschick, C\u00b7I\u00b7B Core Team Member, together with C\u00b7I\u00b7B Director Dave Richardson and C\u00b7I\u00b7B Associate Tim Blackburn investigated whether the birds on the \u201c100 worst\u201d lists are indeed worthy of this honour.<\/p>\n<p>Lists of harmful species such as \u201c100 of the worst\u201d lists are important to educate the public about alien invasive species and the impacts they can cause. However, they have limited use for management and scientific purposes, as the selection on lists are arbitrary and not based on transparent criteria.<\/p>\n<p>The paper, published in <em>Bird Conservation International<\/em>, suggests a new approach for alien species listing according to their impacts, using a semi-quantitative method.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Kumschick and colleagues researched the impacts of the birds listed on two of the most frequent used lists, namely the \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.issg.org\/database\/species\/search.asp?st=100ss\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">100 of the World&#8217;s Worst Invasive Alien Species<\/a>\u201d list of the IUCN and the \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.europe-aliens.org\/speciesTheWorst.do\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">100 of the Worst<\/a>\u201d list of invaders in Europe.<\/p>\n<p>They used a <a href=\"http:\/\/academic.sun.ac.za\/cib\/highpaper\/2015\/01_std_scoring_system.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">generic impact scoring system<\/a> to compare the magnitude of impacts between species, as well as the mechanisms through which the impacts can be caused. This includes for example competition for food and nesting sites, predation on native species, and socioeconomic impacts such as feeding on agricultural crops and disease transmission to humans.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Kumschick and colleagues found that the two lists represent some of the worst invasive birds, and the most important mechanisms causing impacts, with some overlap between the species on the IUCN list.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201c<em>As a way forward, we suggest selecting the \u201cworst\u201d alien species according to a transparent system or guidelines, and backing up such a selection with quantitative data.
