Soil microorganisms play an important role in the functioning of the soil and can be used as direct expression of the impacts of invasive plants on native soils. Silver wattle (<em>Acacia dealbata<\/em> Link) a nitrogen fixing tree native from South West Australia, is currently one of the most problematic plant invaders in Mediterranean-type ecosystems, including large parts of South Africa.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2964\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2964\" style=\"width: 391px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2964 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.sun.ac.za\/cib\/files\/2020\/08\/acacias-on-road.png\" alt=\"Acacias covering a country road in the sampling area\" width=\"391\" height=\"294\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2964\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Acacias covering a country road in the sampling area (Photo credits: Pablo Souza-Alonso)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In a paper published in the journal <em>Soil Biology and Biochemistry<\/em>, researchers from the C\u00b7I\u00b7B (Ana Novoa) and the University of Vigo (Pablo Souza-Alonso and Lu\u00eds Gonz\u00e1lez) studied the impact of the invasive tree Silver Wattle on the nutrient cycling and microbial activity in native soils from two ecosystems in the North West of Spain: Atlantic shrublands and mixed forests of oak (<em>Quercus<\/em>) and pine (<em>Pinus<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p>The study found that the presence of silver wattles changed the chemical characteristics of the soil, mainly the carbon and nitrogen content, in both the shrublands and the mixed forests.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2965\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2965\" style=\"width: 315px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2965\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.sun.ac.za\/cib\/files\/2020\/08\/flowering-acacias.png\" alt=\"Flowering Acacias on a hilltop during the sampling period\" width=\"315\" height=\"303\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2965\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Flowering Acacias on a hilltop during the sampling period (Photo credits: Pablo Souza-Alonso)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The microbial activity was stimulated by the presence of silver wattles and the changes in activity were independent of the phenological stage (growth stages) of the plants. The presence of silver wattles had a different effect on each ecosystem, and it was found the silver wattles produce larger changes in the soil of the shrublands when compared to the soil of the mixed forests of oak and pine. \u201c<em>In our case, the changes found in the microbial activity, together with the changes in chemical composition of the soil, showed that stands of silver wattles caused larger changes in the shrubland when compared to the mixed forests<\/em>.\u201d says Ana Novoa, co-author of the paper. \u201c<em>This study highlights the importance of taking soil components in consideration when studying the impact of invasive plants.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<h4>Read the paper<\/h4>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Souza-Alonso P., Novoa, A., &amp; Gonz\u00e1lez, L.
