Whether <em>C. salviniae<\/em> will remain an effective biocontrol agent in years to come may depend on the species\u2019 ability to cope with temperature increases.<\/p>\n<p>In a study by C\u00b7I\u00b7B PhD student, Jessica Allen, and published in <em>BioControl<\/em>, the temperature tolerance of <em>C. salviniae<\/em> was used as an indication of the species\u2019 sensitivity to climate warming. The results showed that while increases in winter temperatures increase population persistence over cold months, increases in summer temperatures limit its growth.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201c<em>Overall, the success of the weevil as a biocontrol agent in the future will depend on careful monitoring and strategic re-introductions of weevil populations to affected waterbodies<\/em>.\u201d says Jessica Allen, lead author on the study. \u201c<em>These kinds of studies are important to inform and support biological control programmes being implemented in South Africa now, and in the future.<\/em>\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h4>Read the paper<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007%2Fs10526-014-9570-2#page-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Allen, JL, Clusella-Trullas S and Chown, SL (2014) Thermal tolerance of <em>Cyrtobagous salviniae<\/em>: a biocontrol agent in a changing world.
