{"id":3129,"date":"2015-11-03T11:51:00","date_gmt":"2015-11-03T09:51:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.sun.ac.za\/cib\/?p=3129"},"modified":"2020-09-28T11:59:06","modified_gmt":"2020-09-28T09:59:06","slug":"effects-of-prosopis-invasions-and-clearing-on-nama-karoo-rangelands","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.sun.ac.za\/cib\/effects-of-prosopis-invasions-and-clearing-on-nama-karoo-rangelands\/","title":{"rendered":"Effects of Prosopis invasions and clearing on Nama karoo rangelands"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Nama karoo rangelands are vulnerable to overgrazing and consequently soil erosion, but what of the impact of invasive plants?\u00a0 With most research focussing on the impact of alien plants on South Africa\u2019s water resources, the costs of plant invasions on other ecosystem services, such as soil retention, remain understudied.\u00a0 This was a gap targeted by student Thabisisani Ndhlovu. The effects of <em>Prosopis<\/em> invasions and clearing on vegetation cover of Nama Karoo rangelands was the topic of his recent paper published in <em>African Journal of Range and Forage Science<\/em>. Vegetation cover plays an important role in rainfall infiltration, runoff and soil erosion.<\/p>\n<p>Ndhlovu and his C\u00b7I\u00b7B affiliated co-supervisor Karen Esler, and Suzanne Milton, found that below a critical threshold cover level of 6.4%, <em>Prosopis<\/em> did not affect indigenous vegetation, but rather added to it. Beyond this threshold, the impact of <em>Prosopis<\/em> on the indigenous vegetation is significant by reducing the cover of plants, especially grasses. After the clearing of <em>Prosopis<\/em> stands, vegetation cover can return to pre-invasion levels.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201c<em>These findings have the potential to direct clearing efforts in identifying priority areas for clearing<\/em>,\u201d says Thabisisani Ndhlovu, lead author of the paper and currently a PhD student in the Department of Conservation Ecology and Entomology.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h4>Read the papers<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/abs\/10.2989\/10220119.2015.1036460\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ndhlovu, T., Milton, S., Esler, K.J.
