These benefits, also known as \u201cecosystem services\u201d, are critical for our well-being and underpin any future development. Despite an increase in research on ecosystem services, and how these services link to development, it would seem that there is still a gap between ecosystem service research and the implementation of management activities on the ground.<\/p>\n<p>In a paper published in <em>Landscape Ecology, <\/em>PhD student Nadia Sitas and C\u00b7I\u00b7B researchers Prof Karen Esler and Dr Heidi Prozesky, together with Prof Belinda Reyers (CSIR) tested an approach that recognised the importance of multi-stakeholder perspectives in exploring opportunities and challenges for mainstreaming ecosystem services in development planning.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3640\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3640\" style=\"width: 580px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3640 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.sun.ac.za\/cib\/files\/2021\/06\/Pic-2-580x386.jpg\" alt=\"Workshop around ecosystem change and society\" width=\"580\" height=\"386\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.sun.ac.za\/cib\/files\/2021\/06\/Pic-2-580x386.jpg 580w, https:\/\/blogs.sun.ac.za\/cib\/files\/2021\/06\/Pic-2-940x625.jpg 940w, https:\/\/blogs.sun.ac.za\/cib\/files\/2021\/06\/Pic-2-768x511.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.sun.ac.za\/cib\/files\/2021\/06\/Pic-2-1536x1021.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/blogs.sun.ac.za\/cib\/files\/2021\/06\/Pic-2-2048x1362.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 580px) 100vw, 580px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3640\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Workshop around ecosystem change and society<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The research found that many challenges for mainstreaming ecosystem services exist, such as: insufficient resources; confusion about the concept of ecosystem services; tension between environmental and development concerns; weak alignment of policies and legislation and minimal proactive planning. Despite the challenges, the research also found some opportunities for mainstreaming ecosystem services, especially in relation to: communicating ecosystem service science; the contribution of information to disaster risk-reduction; sector and spatial planning; policy tools and regulatory instruments and the important role of champions.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201c<em>This research is important as it highlights the opportunities for mainstreaming ecosystem services that are user-inspired, and that are based on the complexities of management activities on the ground.\u201d<\/em> says Sitas, lead author of the paper.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h4>Read the paper<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s10980-013-9952-3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sitas, N., H.E.
