Candidate <a href=\"https:\/\/blogsdev.sun.ac.za\/eucxylo\/the-team\/#lucy-nevhungwili\">Lucy Nevhungwili<\/a>) were treated to a 4-day <a href=\"https:\/\/rse-at-sun.github.io\/2022-06-27-stellenbosch\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Data Carpentry workshop<\/a> last week, hosted by <a href=\"https:\/\/rse.sun.ac.za\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">RSE@SUN<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/jan-c-greyling-a653532\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr Jan Greyling<\/a> of the AgroInformatics Initiative at Stellenbosch University.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>A senior Research Software Engineer (RSE) from Newcastle University &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/jannetta\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr Jannetta Steyn<\/a> &#8211; demonstrated the use of <a href=\"https:\/\/openrefine.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">OpenRefine<\/a> for cleaning and preparing data for analysis.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff9900\">EucXylo<\/span> Ph.D. Candidate <a href=\"https:\/\/blogsdev.sun.ac.za\/eucxylo\/the-team\/#mpilo-khumalo\">Mpilo Khumalo<\/a> presented instructional material on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.r-project.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">R Programming Language<\/a> (focusing on manipulating data using the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tidyverse.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tidyverse<\/a> framework, and visualising results with <a href=\"https:\/\/ggplot2.tidyverse.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ggplot<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff9900\">EucXylo<\/span> Postdoctoral Research Fellow <a href=\"https:\/\/blogsdev.sun.ac.za\/eucxylo\/the-team\/#kim-martin\">Dr Kim Martin<\/a> introduced attendees to version control with <a href=\"https:\/\/git-scm.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Git<\/a>, and demonstrated the use of the <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">GitHub<\/a> cloud platform and associated desktop software to collaboratively manage data analysis code (including publishing the results as a simple website via GitHub).<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Feedback was extremely positive (including some unsolicited feedback on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/posts\/ayesha-shaikh-a0b33a180_such-an-exciting-week-thats-passed-learnt-activity-6948341746162368512-5m-R\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">LinkedIn<\/a>!); it is clear that there is great demand and value for such skills among researchers in AgriScience.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><figure id=\"attachment_1273\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1273\" style=\"width: 1206px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1273 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/blogsdev.sun.ac.za\/eucxylo\/files\/2022\/07\/DCW-June22.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1206\" height=\"774\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1273\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The workshop webpage: https:\/\/rse-at-sun.github.io\/2022-06-27-stellenbosch\/<\/figcaption><\/figure>[:]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>[:en] Post authored by Postdoctoral Research Fellow Kim Martin Over 20 eager AgriScience researchers (including EucXylo M.Sc.
