Last week marked 68 years since the death of Hans Merensky, founder of the Hans Merensky Foundation<\/a> – the organisation which supports the EucXylo<\/strong><\/span> research programme.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n He was a talented geologist, passionate advocate for technological progress, and generous benefactor to the country of his birth: his legacy includes educational facilities and generations of trained researchers, and the Foundation<\/strong><\/a> which bears his name continues to support scientific research and sustainable industry in South Africa.<\/p>\n He was instrumental in the establishment of Stellenbosch University’s<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Department of Forestry<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>in 1932<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>(Wicht 1958)<\/a>, and bequeathed much of his fortune in establishing the Hans Merensky Trust (the forerunner to the<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Foundation<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0<\/span>that exists today). His support for forestry and scientific research in South Africa continues to this day, over half a century after his death, through the<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Hans Merensky Chair in Advanced Modelling of Eucalypt Wood Formation<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>and the funding necessary for the ambitious<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>EucXylo<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>programme of research<\/strong><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/a>Wicht, C.
