{"id":503,"date":"2020-12-10T13:16:23","date_gmt":"2020-12-10T11:16:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogsdev.sun.ac.za\/eucxylo\/?p=503"},"modified":"2020-12-10T13:16:23","modified_gmt":"2020-12-10T11:16:23","slug":"attending-the-inaugural-q-net-workshop","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.sun.ac.za\/eucxylo\/2020\/12\/10\/attending-the-inaugural-q-net-workshop\/","title":{"rendered":"[:en]Attending the inaugural Q-NET workshop[:]"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[:en]<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Members of <span style=\"color: #ff9900\">EucXylo<\/span> recently attended the inaugural (virtual) workshop hosted by <a href=\"https:\/\/qwa-net.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Q-NET<\/a> &#8211; a newly-formed and rapidly-growing network intended for scholars using <strong>Quantitative Wood Anatomy (QWA)<\/strong> in various contexts. The network is intended to promote interdisciplinary collaborations for advancing methodologies and knowledge in this field, and is currently supported by the <a href=\"https:\/\/tree-ring.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Association for Tree-Ring Research (ATR)<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iawa-website.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">International Association of Wood Anatomists (IAWA)<\/a>, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.treeringsociety.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tree-Ring Society (TRS)<\/a>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<figure id=\"attachment_505\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-505\" style=\"width: 760px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-505\" src=\"http:\/\/blogsdev.sun.ac.za\/eucxylo\/files\/2020\/12\/Q-NET-GvA-intro-1024x479.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"760\" height=\"356\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-505\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Screenshot from Q-NET virtual workshop showing Dr Georg von Arx outlining the Q-NET process for promoting collaboration<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The inaugural workshop was a great opportunity for <span style=\"color: #ff9900\">EucXylo<\/span> researchers (including students) to interact with colleagues across the world (from 45 countries, at current count). Almost 200 motivated researchers attended the event, and after an initial presentation by <a href=\"https:\/\/qwa-net.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Q-NET<\/a> Coordination Team founding member Dr Georg von Arx, we were divided between ten different sessions depending on topic of greatest interest.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_506\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-506\" style=\"width: 760px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-506\" src=\"http:\/\/blogsdev.sun.ac.za\/eucxylo\/files\/2020\/12\/Q-NET-sessions-1024x480.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"760\" height=\"356\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-506\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Screenshot of Q-NET workshop showing another member of the Coordination Team giving an overview of the ten different session topics<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff9900\">EucXylo<\/span> members attended several sessions including &#8216;<strong>Modelling &amp; QWA: from cell to ecosystem<\/strong>&#8216;, where the previous work of <a href=\"https:\/\/blogsdev.sun.ac.za\/eucxylo\/the-team\/#dave-drew\">Dr Dave Drew<\/a> in pioneering xylogenesis modelling in hardwoods was highlighted by the session moderators. <span style=\"color: #ff9900\">EucXylo<\/span> members participated in the lively discussions, aimed at identifying key knowledge gaps and next steps in the field, and the experience was invigorating and gratifying.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Congratulations to Dr Georg von Arx and the other members of the <a href=\"https:\/\/qwa-net.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Q-NET<\/a> Coordination Team for a well-organized inaugural event, and for initiating such a valuable community platform!<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>[:]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>[:en] Members of EucXylo recently attended the inaugural (virtual) workshop hosted by Q-NET &#8211; a newly-formed and rapidly-growing network intended for scholars using Quantitative Wood Anatomy (QWA) in various contexts.
